II. Since centuries ago, women have fought for their rights to go to school, to possess

equal opportunities and to get equal payments for work like men. Nowadays, however, a
wife is considered to better devote herself to the housework instead of her work.

Take Mileva Maric for example, she is the first wife of Albert Einstein, the genius

mathematician and physicist. In 1896, she was one of the selected few women who were
accepted to study at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). She was nearly 21,

and one of her classmates was Albert Einstein, a seventeen-year-old boy. She got excellent
grades in her first two years, which provided her much satisfaction. She also helped
Einstein with schoolwork. After they got married, Mileva became of secondary importance

and stopped her pursuit for scholarship.

However, a few years after Einstein fell in love with another woman, they got
divorced and Mileva had to raise their two sons − Hans and Eduard who was mentally ill.

Though Einstein has been generally portrayed as a scientific saint, few have noted this
ambitious woman who shared her husband’s interest in science.

                          37. According to the passage, how did Mileva and Einstein meet each other?
